About

Curious Kind Movement

Many years ago, I had a yearning to find something that involved movement, learning and personal growth – something that I could understand consciously and feel or sense on a deep level too. I had no idea what that would be. Other forms of movement practices had come close but were not quite it for me.

This changed when my close friend, Helga accidentally signed up for a Feldenkrais workshop thinking she was doing yoga.  She described in detail what she did, in this half-day workshop, saying how curious it was and unlike anything she had done before. I did some of the movements, she shared, and that was it, I knew I had found what I was looking for.

Awareness Through Movement

Whats a ATM Lesson

The Feldenkrais Method® provides an easy and accessible way for us to learn about ourselves and improve our movement and quality of life. Awareness Through Movement (ATM) lessons create opportunities to look at habits and how they serve us. Click here to find out more about habits. Lessons provide a way to expand curiosity and learn new things about how we move, think, sense and feel, in a way that can be useful in our daily lives.

Lessons take place on the floor, lying on a soft mat or sometimes in a sitting posistion. They generally last about an hour. In a group ATM class, your teacher talks you through, step-by-step, a sequence of small movements. There are thousands of lessons from quieter lessons to the more challenging with bigger or dynamic movements. What they all have in common is they begin with small movements, gradually building in range.

Anchor About - Awareness through movement

"Learning must be pleasurable, and it must be easy; the two make breathing simple. What is learnt otherwise rarely become habitually spontaneous."

–Moshe Feldenkrais

The Founder of Feldenkrais

Feldenkrais is named after its founder, Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984).  It is built upon his expertise in physics, engineering and judo.

Through extensive research, Dr Moshe Feldenkrais developed a way to make his learning accessible to everyone. The Feldenkrais method brings together both the science and the art of human movement. Its focus is on learning through developing awareness.

Who's it for?

Feldenkrais is for everybody and of any age. Whether you want to experience more ease and comfort as you bend or reach, or when working at your desk, playing with your children or grandchildren, or if you are experiencing stress, anxiety or pain. It can also work for people with neurological, conditions, such as strokes and is equally effective in enhancing performance in sports and the Arts.

Neruma's Personal Experience

About Your Teacher

I spent 5 years going to regular Awareness Through Movement classes and workshops. Going on a retreat in Tuscany, spending a week immersed in Feldenkrais in beautiful surroundings was a turning point for me. It whetted my appetite for further learning and kindled a desire to become a Feldenkrais Practitioner. Shortly afterwards, I embarked on my training and I am now a qualified Feldenkrais Practitioner.

How Habits Serve Us

Training our habitual ways

Much of what we think and do is learned behaviour. From the moment we are born and particularly in our early years we are immersed in learning skills that help us to function in our environment. These skills become our habitual ways of doing things.

As we age, our habits can become more ingrained and we may subconsciously develop traits that work against us. This could lead to pain or difficulty in movement, tension and stress.

Habits and Feldenkrais

Finding new movement

The good news is that the brain is adaptable and we are able to learn new skills throughout our lives. In the Feldenkrais Method®, we use movement and awareness to first become aware of our habits and then help the brain replace damaging habits with more efficient ones. The method works with the nervous system to address issues from the inside out that can form long-lasting and permanent change.

The Feldenkrais Method® facilitates new ways of moving and thinking in relation to our habits and provides options to change them.
